Highway 012010 Minutes

Town of Auburn

Highway Safety Committee

January 20, 2010

Present:        Mr. Mike DiPietro, Mr. Dan Carpenter, Mrs. Eva Komaradis, and Mr. Paul Raiche, Selectmen’s Representative.

bullet Meeting Called to order at 7:05.  Helen Hiltz, Highway Safety Committee secretary, was recording minutes.

bulletThe meeting minutes for September 2009, October 2009 and November 2009 were reviewed and amended slightly to add more detail.

bullet Motion by Mr. Paul Raiche to accept amended minutes. Second by Mr. Dan Carpenter.  All in favor – motion carries.

bullet Discussion took place on what would be entered into the town report this year.

·        The 1st paragraph will stay as documented in last years’ town report.

·        A 4th stop sign was added at Dearborn Road at the intersection of Chester Turnpike.

·        Hook Brook Bridge on Chester turnpike was widened to alleviate flooding.

·        Sight lines were improved on Dearborn Road north of Nutt Road.

·        Sight lines were improved at the school.

·        Major roads were striped.

·        Road agent reports the FEMA money was used to  remove snow damage hazards throughout town.

2010 priorities:

·        The Highway Safety Committee will continue to work with the Police department on highway safety grants.  Consensus reached that all Highway Safety Grants be brought to the meeting to be signed.

·         We will continue to work on tree and shrub removal to maintain and improve sight issues.

·        Discussions will continue on the hazardous conditions posed at the four corners in the center of town.  Both roads are under state jurisdiction so our options are limited.

·        The Committee will review areas of town that may warrant  stop lines.

·        Sight distance and road conditions on Dearborn Road between Buttonwood and Raymond Road will be reviewed.

·        Mr. Dan Carpenter suggested that brush be cut starting at the bridge by the school.  Mr. Paul Raiche noted that this cannot be done legally.  The “Comprehensive Shoreline Protection Act “ states that only a certain percentage of trees and brush can be cut on the shoreline.   Mr. Mike DiPietro sited the “Wetland Buffer Protection Act” as well.  Only grand fathered areas are allowed.

·        Mr. Dan Carpenter noted that the traffic pattern at the school was now well controlled and the school has done a good job establishing practices to address foot traffic .

·        Mr. Dan Carpenter stated that the frost heaves were starting to get really bad, notable on Hook Road and Route 121.

·        Mr. Mike DiPietro remarked on the good job that Mr. Bill Herman and Mr. Mike Dross are doing addressing issues and concerns that are brought up by the residents of Auburn.  The road conditions were also praised.

·        Next meeting will be February 17th at 7:00.

Motion to adjourn at 8:25 by Mr. Raiche

Second – Mrs. Komaradis

All in favor.
